Sightsavers

Optical Express have once again teamed up with Sightsavers for a special Christmas appeal, which aims to help over 1 million blind or poorly sighted people restore their visual quality.

There are currently 39 million blind people in the world. A massive 80% of this blindness can be prevented or cured.

Sightsavers is an international organisation who works to combat blindness, restore sight to blind people and prevent others losing their sight to blinding diseases whilst also supporting people who are irreversibly blind or disabled to live independently.

Every £30 raised by Sightavers is enough to cover the cost of a cataract operation for an adult. Their appeal is aiming to provide one million sight saving surgeries in three years and so far has raised £4.8 million. With the government’s Department for International Development matching the donations, the current total is an amazing £9.7 million.

Last year Sightsavers supported:

  • More than 103 million treatments to protect against neglected tropical diseases
  • Over 8 million eye examinations
  • Over 296,000 operations to restore sight or prevent blindness
  • More than 9,000 children with disabilities to attend school

Optical Express are actively working with Sightsavers to help combat curable eye diseases in some of the poorest parts of the world.
