Connswater Boy Gives Gift of Better Vision to African Countries

An eco-initiative run by a ten year old boy will see over 200 pairs of glasses donated to eye care charity, Vision Aid Overseas with the help of Optical Express.

Harry Campbell, a pupil at Orangefield Primary School, pioneered a project which collected an impressive amount of spectacles to donate to the international charity. As part of his school’s Eco Programme which promotes sustainability as an integral aspect of school life, Harry used recycling as a way to improve access to eye care in Africa.

In a clever move to boost the total number of glasses collected, Harry approached leading eye care provider Optical Express, to maximise the contribution.

‘The team at Optical Express were amazed as local school boy Harry Campbell became an Eco Warrior collecting over 100 pairs of spectacles for charity,” commented Jacqueline Thompson, Manager at Optical Express in Connswater.

“We regularly receive spectacle donations from patients who have underwent laser eye surgery, so we were absolutely thrilled to match Harry’s total number of glasses collected to take the total to 240 pairs. These spectacles will help correct the eyesight of less fortunate children and adults overseas and we’re proud to be a part of this after Harry’s inspirational efforts.”

Jeremy Jalie, Development Director at Vision Aid, said:

“Vision Aid Overseas would like to thank Harry Campbell for his incredible support collecting 100 spectacles in Connswater. By helping to raise awareness in his community and engaging with Optical Express who supported him by matching the donation, Harry is helping to provide vital eye care services for people living in developing countries.”

“It is shocking that 670 million people around the world are disabled or disadvantaged simply because they don’t have spectacles – but it is extremely warming to know that young men like Harry care enough to show leadership in their community. Thank you, Harry.”
